Welcome back to our Quilt Along in celebration of my birthday this year.

We are posting here on our blog every week with 1 new 6" finished quilt block design!



I am sew thankful to all of you that want to join me on this Birthday Quilt Along.



You can start making this quilt with the recommended bundles below or using scraps from your stash. A Fat Quarter Bundle and Fat Eighth Bundle are great starting points.

This would be a perfect time to pull fabrics from your stash and mix and match with our bundles to make this quilt your very own.

I will be making my blocks using a Cocoa Blue Fat Quarter Bundle and the Birthday Bundle 2024 to create this Birthday quilt! There may be some sprinkles of a few favorites from my blue collections.


This project is available for anyone to join in! It will be 55 blocks in 52 weeks. Every Tuesday we will be making a new block(s), so don't forget to Sign Up for our Newsletters and visit our blog each week to quilt along!


At the end of the year I will be providing a variety of layouts for your beautiful 6" blocks.

Blocks: Cocoa Blue Fat Quarter Bundle

Background: 2½ yards Border: 2 yards

Binding: 1 yard

Please make sure you have 1/4" around all your units and blocks. Do not trim your points.


Birthday Block 35


Block Cutting

14-medium light QSTs cut from 4 squares 3¼"

4-light QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

4-medium QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

4-medium QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

4-medium QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

2-medium QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

2-dark QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"


Note from Edyta: Use the final image below to arrange the correct colors

for units before sewing.


Arrange 2 medium light 3¼" QSTs and 2 medium 3¼" QSTs.


Sew a medium light QST to each medium QST.


Sew together and press. Make 9 units in total.

QST Unit size: 2 ½" x 2 ½"unfinished


Arrange all 9 QST units following the image above.


Sew into rows, then sew rows together and press.



Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"


Press your block and enjoy!

Unfinished Block Size: 6½" x 6½"

Block Cutting

8-light HSTs cut from 4 squares 2⅜"

4-dark HSTs cut from 2 squares 2⅜"

2-medium HSTs cut from 1 square 2⅜"

1-dark HST cut from 1 square 3"

2-dark HSTs cut from 1 square 2⅜"

1-light HST cut from 1 square 3"

2-light 2" x 3½" rectangles


Note from Edyta: For this project, I'm going to try something different

and press all my seams open if I can.


To make HST Unit A, combine 1 light and 1 dark 2⅜" HST.

To make HST Unit B, combine 1 light and 1 medium 2⅜" HST.


A B


Sew together and press. Make 4 HST Unit A. Make 2 HST Unit B.

A&B HST Unit size: 2" x 2" unfinished


To begin building the basket block, arrange your A and B units with 2 light 2⅜" HSTs.



Sew into rows.


Sew rows together and press.


Add 1 dark 3" HST.


Press.

Unit size: 5" X 5"


Next, sew 1 dark 2⅜" HST and 1 light 2" x 3½" rectangle together.



Make 2.


Sew one by one, to the main block unit.


Complete your block by adding a light 3" HST. Press.



Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"


Press your block and enjoy!

Unfinished Block Size: 6½" x 6½"

Make 1

Birthday Block 33

This block will be made using the English Paper Piecing technique.

Watch our Video on YouTube for basic English Paper Piecing directions.



Block Cutting:

Here are your Paper Shapes PDF

*if you printed the PDF before 8/16/24, please refresh your browser page and reprint your PDFs.  There was an accidental error in the scale of the original PDF.


Start by cutting your shapes out from your printed PDF page. Place your shapes on fabric and cut. Remember to cut them 1/4" larger so you can wrap the paper edge with fabric.


You will need to prepare:

8-medium Template B

1-dark Template A

8-dark Template B

8-medium Template D

8-light Template C

4-light squares Template E

4-light triangles Template F



Once all your shapes are ready, start with dark center template A.


Combine template A with 8 medium triangles B as shown. Using Aurifil Thread, needle, and simple whip stitch, sew pieces together.



Next, arrange 8 light templates C. Sew together.



Prepare piece D and dark piece B by sewing them together.

Once completed, sew into the center unit.



Arrange 4 light corner squares E and 4 light triangles F around the center star unit.

Using English Paper Piecing technique, sew all together.



Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"


Press your block and enjoy!

Unfinished Block Size: 6½" x 6½"
