Birthday Quilt 2024 - Block 8

It is Tuesday and I am SEW excited about this week's block,

and being able to share it with you!

To celebrate my birthday, we are having a surprise Mystery Block Quilt Along, and I am planning to post here on our blog each week with a new 6" finished quilt block design!

I am sew thankful to all of you that want to join me on this Birthday Quilt Along.

If you haven't gotten your supplies yet, don't worry, you have plenty of time to jump in!

You can start making this quilt with the recommended bundles below or using scraps from your stash.

A Fat Quarter Bundle and Fat Eighth Bundle are great starting points.

This would be a perfect time to pull fabrics from your stash and mix and match with our bundles to make this quilt your very own.

Another great option, is your beautiful fabrics from our Laundry Basket Quilts Fabric Club stash!

I will be making my blocks using a Cocoa Blue Fat Quarter Bundle and the Birthday Bundle 2024 to create this Birthday quilt! There may be some sprinkles of a few favorites from my blue collections.

This project is available for anyone to join in! It will be 55 blocks in 52 weeks. Every Tuesday we will be making a new block(s), so don't forget to Sign Up for our Newsletters and visit our blog each week, including previous weeks posts to quilt along with me!

At the end of the year I will be providing a variety of layouts for your beautiful 6" blocks.

Birthday Quilt Fabric Requirements

Blocks: Cocoa Blue Fat Quarter Bundle

Background : 2½ yards Border : 2 yards

Binding : 1 yard

(our Birthday Bundle is perfect for this!)

I'm sew excited to begin -

let's jump right in!

Note from Edyta: All pictures below show finished size images.

Please make sure you have 1/4" around all your units and blocks. Do not trim your points.

Birthday Block 8

Block cutting

8-dark HSTs cut from 4 squares 1-7/8"

4-dark QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

4-medium QSTs cut from 1 square 3¼"

12-light HSTs cut from 6 squares 1-7/8"

4-medium rectangles 1-7/8" x 3-3/8"

1-dark center square 1-7/8"

To make Flying Geese, arrange 1 medium 3¼" QST and 2 dark 1-7/8 HSTs.

Sew together and press. Make 4 flying geese.

Flying Geese size:  1½" x 2½" unfinished

Note from Edyta: For this project, I'm going to try something different

and press all my seams open if i can.

Arrange 1 flying geese unit, 1 dark 3¼" QST, and 2 light 1-7/8" HSTs.

Sew together starting with dark QST.

Press. Make 4 side units.

Arrange 4 side units, 4 light 1-7/8" HSTs, 4 medium 1-7/8" x 3-3/8" rectangles,

and 1 dark 1-7/8" center square .

Sew rectangles and 4 light HST as shown above.

Sew into sections, then sew sections together and press.

Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"

Press your block and enjoy!

Unfinished Block Size: 6½" x 6½"

Birthday Quilt 2024 - Bonus Block 2

Your second bonus block comes today for Valentine's Day, February 14th!

On this special day, we celebrate and cherish our loved ones who make our lives possible every day.

Block Assembly

Gather some of your extra Cocoa Blue scraps!

Have fun with this - find those striking fabrics that really grab your eye.

Use your favorite appliqué technique and CLICK HERE to download your Birthday Block Heart Shapes!

We also have a wonderful NEW Stencil!

If you need a little help, watch this video for appliqué tips.

I like to use Heat n Bond Lite for fusible applique and stitch with Aurifil Threads around the edges.

Cut out 4 heart shapes.

This is the perfect time to fall in love with appliqué!

Cut 4 - 3½" background squares from your light fabrics .

Sew background squares together into a four patch.

Arrange your heart shapes using the picture above as your inspiration.

Finish with adding some beautiful stitches to hold your pieces in place with the technique of your choice.

Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"

Press your block and enjoy!

Unfinished Block Size: 6½" x 6½"

Block cutting

6-light squares 1½"

4-dark HSTs cut from 2 squares 2-7/8"

4-light HSTs cut from 2 squares 2-7/8"

4-medium squares 1½"

4-light squares 1½"

Begin by making a Four Patch with 2 medium 1½" squares and 2 light 1½" squares.

Sew into rows and sew rows together.

Press. Make 2.

Four Patch size: 2½" x 2½" unfinished

Note from Edyta: For this project, I'm going to try something different

To make HST units, join 1 dark 2-7/8" HST and 1 light 2-7/8" HST.

Press. Make 4.

HST unit size: 2½" x 2½" unfinished

For your next Four Patches, use 2 dark 1½" squares

and 2 light 1½" squares.

Sew into rows and sew rows together.

Press. Make 3.

Four Patch size: 2½" x 2½" unfinished

Arrange Four Patches and HST units following the image above.

Sew into rows then sew rows together and press.

Finished Block Size: 6" x 6"
